Paper Mill on fire in North Wales

Firefighters were called to a fire at a paper mill in north Wales on Sunday (July 24th) and spent almost seven hours on the scene trying to get the blaze under control.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent seven fire crews and three specialist units to the blaze at Oakenholt Paper Mill, located in Flintshire, according to BBC News.

The blaze started shortly before 8.48pm, which is when the fire service was called.

Wood Waste levels falling across the UK

Wood waste levels are falling across UK Wood waste arisings in the UK have fallen by 10% since 2007, according to new research by WRAP - the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

The decrease is primarily down to reduced activity in the construction industry, WRAP claim, which accounted for 50% of the consumption of wood and wood products in 2010.

A slowdown in the furniture and joinery sectors is also noted as a contributing factor.

Timberpak to open second new wood recycling site.

Wood recycling company Timberpak is preparing to open a second new wood recycling facility this summer.

Just days after officially unveiling a £2 million wood recycling operaton in Washington, near Sunderland last week (July 13), the company’s operations director, Mark Hayton, revealed that another site at Bellshill in North Lanarkshire, Scotland was due to open “imminently”.

The site will be Timberpak’s third, after the Washington facility and the company’s flagship recycling operation in Leeds. It will provide recycled woodchip to the panelboard factory in Ayrshire operated by Timberpak’s parent company, the board manufacturer Egger.

Coventry fire tears through workshop

More than 70 firefighters were required to tackle a huge blaze in Coventry that ripped through car repair workshops.

The Coventry Telegraph reports that 13 fire engines were called to B&A Garages on Friday as a blaze consumed six cars and 500 tyres.

Smoke was visible from the city centre, while a series of small explosions occurred at the workshops, where acetylene cylinders were stored.

In total four workshops – each leased to a different business – were ruined by the blaze. Although the cause of the fire is not yet known, a full investigation is set to start once the building is made safe.
